Last year the Giants made it to the playoffs. They got smacked by the Packers 38-13. It was Odell Beckham’s first playoff appearance and it won’t be his last. But if the Giants don’t get their stuff together then I am gonna look really stupid. The Giants defense was fantastic last season and was the majority of the reason they made the playoffs. I’m gonna throw some numbers out just in case you didn’t realize how good they were. New York finished 1st last season in touchdowns allowed and red zone defense. Opposing teams only converted a touchdown in the red zone on 42.5% of their trips. They were 2nd in the league in 3rd down percentage, defensive scoring overall, passing touchdowns allowed and interceptions. I know that’s a lot of numbers but keep up. But the only real ones you need are 6-1 and 5-5. Those are the records the Giants went with Odell scoring and not scoring a touchdown including the playoffs. When Beckham finds the end zone they went 6-1. They 5-5 when he didn’t. This defense was a juggernaut last season and I’m not taking anything away from them because they were arguably the best in the league. But the main point of this is about OBJ and that offense so I’ll get to them.
The Giants don’t have a solid run game established and the passing game has shown to be extremely inconsistent. It really just depends on the type of facial expression Eli Manning gives you that night. Others will say Beckham isn’t the only skilled receiver so his absence shouldn’t be missed more than anybody else. Those people are in a word wrong. While the Giants receiving corp is amazing even without Beckham he brings so much extra to the table. He has that X factor that offensive coordinators light up at. He has the ability to change the whole game in one play. He has been atop the league among receivers since he was drafted in 2014. Last season was one of those. The only difference was it took Odell 5 games to get going last year. He scored his 1st touchdown of the season in week 5 and was still in the top 10 of the NFL. Let that sink in for a second. He could’ve have just sat on his couch for the first quarter of the season and he would have still finished top 10. That’s sort of amazing. It has to be the hair. Ramen noodles are back and they’re better than ever. But in all seriousness I did use the same shampoo as Odell because I thought it would help mine look better and it felt amazing.
The Giants lost Monday night to the Lions in what had the potential to be a great matchup. It was not. By the middle of the 4th I had lost interest in the game. Odell recorded a mere 4 receptions for 46 yards. He did have a nice 16 yard play that got me pretty excited but not much else. I wasn’t expecting Odell to have a monster night because of the ankle injury, and I think I got what I expected. But the Giants are 0-2. Their next three games are Philly, Tampa Bay and the LA Chargers. Philly is a division rival who played pretty well last week. Tampa has become a threatening team. They’ll beat LA. If they don’t beat LA then Coach McAdoo should shave his head. That would actually do a lot of favors. I know Odell isn’t completely 100% but his ankle looked fine Monday. He should explosiveness and showed signs of himself. But he didn’t look like the Odell that catches balls with three fingers and two defenders on him. I know that’s a lot of pressure on Odell. But that’s only due to how successful they are when he’s playing well. The main point of this is if Odell doesn’t start to look like himself then I am gonna look pretty silly. In the preseason I picked New York to make it to the Super Bowl. Believe me I still think they’re going to get there. They just don’t look like it right now. OBJ started slow last season and the Giants went 6-1 once he started rolling. This year there are more offensive weapons so his offense should help him carry the load. The first two games were a test for the Giants. They failed. They played two playoff teams and were dominated. The rest of their schedule is pretty tough and they can’t afford to get in a deep hole early. OBJ is going to be vital to their success for this season. My suggestion is New York gets some blockers up front or Adam Sandler to become the new waterboy. Otherwise the defense will again have to carry this team into the playoffs just to get killed in the first game. I do think as the season goes on they will find their groove. I hope for my sake at least that they do. I hate looking stupid on the internet.
