On this day in 1999, Michael Jordan announced his second retirement from professional basketball during the 1998-99 NBA lockout season. Jordan’s first retirement from professional basketball was in 1993, six years before his second retirement. After his first retirement, Jordan returned to the Chicago Bulls for another series of championships. Of course this would not be Jordan’s final retirement. He would return to the NBA in 2000 as a member of the Washington Wizards front office. Despite being a mere shadow of the player he was in Chicago, Jordan would go on to play two final seasons with the Wizards. Jordan would retire for good in 2003 after the 2002-03 season, the same year LeBron James would be joining the NBA.
