On this day in 1982, the New York Islanders began what would be a record setting 15 game winning streak in NHL history. They beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The Islanders record of a 15 game win streak would be broken in 1992 by the Pittsburgh Penguins who would go on to win 17 straight games (how ironic). The 1982 NY Islanders would not only have a 15 game winning streak, they were the Stanley Cup champions that year as well. They would play the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals where they would sweep the Canucks 4-0. It was the third straight championship the Islanders won in-a-row. The Islanders won four straight Stanley Cup championships between 1980-1983. In the timespan of their dynasty, the Islanders won 19 straight playoff series, a feat unparalleled in professional sports to this day.
