Sunday’s NFC Championship came down the final minutes like most thought it would. Now I’ve time to let the dust settle I can think about it clearly. Down 31-23 with just over two minutes left in the game, the Packers needed eight yards for a touchdown. Then they would need a two-point conversion just for the tie. On 1st & goal Rodgers threw a pass to Allen Lazard, and it looked like he had no clue it was even coming to him. If he snags it then maybe none of this happens at all and we are talking about that game completely differently. But that’s fairy tale talk. 2nd & goal and Rodgers has a clear lane ahead of him but defenders are starting to swarm. He tries to fit the ball in a tight window on the run, and it’s incomplete. 3rd & goal and this is the real question mark of it all. Rodgers has a lane and nothing but green grass ahead. Defenders are in the area but if he decides to take off he’s gonna gain at least 3-5 yards with his feet. He’s shown so many times his ability to make things happen with his feet, and this was definitely that chance. Instead, he tries to force the ball in a window tight for even him. Would Rodgers have scored if he runs? No probably not. Devin White is fast. But positive yards are better than an incomplete pass for no gain. And a 4th and goal from the 3 or the 4-yard line seems a lot more feasible than from the 8-yard line. I know kicking the field goal and trying to get a stop with four timeouts (two-minute warning) is statistically the smarter play. But it’s Aaron Rodgers. I know that Aaron Rodgers is “The Guy” for super-quick, no time remaining, game-winning drives so there’s a case for both sides. What would have happened if he had run the ball? Does it change the outcome? I think so. But like the amount of licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop, we’ll never know.
