How Relationships Dictate Coaching Hires in Football

When you want to hire someone for a job, who would you rather hire? Someone you don’t know, regardless of how well they interviewed for the position, or someone you’ve already had work experience with that you feel is capable of doing well? A great deal of coaching hires in football are based on two people who have previously worked together. This may or may not be a good thing based on how you look at it. From one point of view you know what you’re getting because you have better insight to that person because you have been around them before. You know what they can and can’t do along with what their strengths and weaknesses are. On the other hand you may not be hiring the best candidate for the open position because you would rather hire someone you have previously worked with rather than taking a chance on someone you may not be familiar with. You could essentially be passing on a person who could bring a new spin and angle on things that you might not get from someone you have previously worked with who might think similarly to you. Think about it.
