On this day in 1987, the Sacramento Kings set the kind of record you don’t want people to know about. The Kings scored 4 points in the opening quarter, setting the record for the fewest points in a quarter since the inception of the 24 second shot-clock in 1954. The Kings were down to the Los Angeles lakers 40-4 after the opening quarter. They would go on to lose 128-92. The record of fewest points in a quarter was broken in 1997 by the Dallas Mavericks who only scored 2 points in the third quarter. Ironically enough, it was against the Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas would go on to lose 87-80. The Golden State Warriors tied Dallas’ record of 2 points in the fourth quarter of an overtime loss to the Toronto Raptors. There has never been a game in NBA history where a team went scoreless for an entire period. But these three teams came extremely close.
