Today In Sports History (February 8, 1960)

On this day in 1960, Bill Russell became the first ever NBA player to get 50 rebounds in a game with 51. It broke the NBA record of 49 rebounds (also owned by Russell). Bill Russell ended the game with 23 points, 51 rebounds and 5 assists and led the Celtics in a 124-100 stomping of the Syracuse Nationals (now Philadelphia 76ers). Russell’s record of 51 rebounds was broken nine months later by Wilt Chamberlain who had 55 rebounds in a game against Bill Russell and the Celtics. Bill Russell is the most decorated NBA champion of all time winning 11 championships in 13 years.
