Today In Sports History (February 10, 1971)

On this day in 1971, Bill White became the first African American baseball announcer for a major league baseball team. White had a playing career with the Giants, Phillies and the Cardinals as a 1st baseman. White helped the Cardinals win the World Series over the Yankees in 1964, and he was a five time All-star in his career. After he retired from playing, White agreed to sign to the broadcast team of the NY Yankees, making him the first black announcer on a major league baseball team. Later on in his life, White became the president of the National League in 1989. He would retire as the National League president in 1994. On May 22, 2020, Bill White was inducted in the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.
