Today In Sports History (February 11, 1928)

On this day in 1928, the second ever Winter Olympic Games started in St. Moritz, Switzerland. It was the second time the Winter Olympics would take place, with 25 countries participating in total. It would mark the first time Japanese athletes would compete in the Winter Olympics. There were 14 events in total, with the inclusion of a new Olympic event. The 1928 Games would see the introduction of the skeleton, an event similar to the luge, but you go down headfirst. The 1928 Winter Olympics were dominated by Norway, much like the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix. Norway ended with 15 medals in total (two less than 1924) with 6 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze (led all countries). The United States was the next closest with 6 medals in total. The host country Switzerland ended up with a single bronze medal, tying four other countries with one medal in total. That’s got to sting.

I see why it’s called the skeleton. It’s a death wish.
