On this day in 1930, an Illinois high school basketball game lasted an improbable 10 overtime periods. It was a matchup between archival schools; the Wenona Mustangs and the Toluca Wildcats. The Mustangs would come out on top over the Wildcats in a relatively low-scoring affair, considering it lasted 10 OT periods. The final score was 26-22 in the favor of the Mustangs.
Surprisingly enough, that is not the record for the most overtime periods in an organized basketball game in American history. A high school game in North Carolina lasted 13 overtime periods on February 29, 1964. That’s right, Leap Day. The day we get every four years also happens to be the same day an organized basketball game (high school) went into more overtime periods than ever before. It’s funny how things work like that. The two schools were Boone Trail High and Angier High, where Boone Trail came out on top 54-52. After regulation, the game was tied 44-44. How surprising? The day that happens every four years and it was 4 across the board. The best part about all of it was Bonne Trail’s leading scorer. Frankie Stewart led all Boone Trail players with 29 points, on February 29th. I mean come on now. That’s just too perfect.
