Time Machine Tuesday: After His Rough N’ Rowdy KO Loss, Let’s Look Back at Jose Canseco’s Short-Lived MMA Career

The boxing promotion Rough N’ Rowdy just had their 13th event about a week and a half ago. Barstool Sports intern Billy Football was fighting in the main event against former baseball player Jose Canseco. Canseco was famously outcasted by the baseball world after publishing his book, detailing the use of steroids in pro baseball. Since then, Canseco has dabbled with other professional sports, however his athletic outings have never really elevated his professional athletic career. Canseco fought at the Rough N’ Rowdy boxing promotion earlier this month, where he was KO’d a few seconds into the fight by young Pardon My Take intern Billy Football. Young Football claimed he would wear down Canseco, but instead dropped him like a sack of potatoes in a deep fryer. Some say Canseco took a ‘dive’ and was only in it for the money. Canseco did pocket $1 million from the fight, so that may definitely have been true. If that’s the case, what a weenie move. But the human steroid has never really won any popularity contests, and he probably doesn’t care to.

Before Canseco found his way into the main event of Rough N’ Rowdy, he tried his hand at mixed martial arts. On May 26, 2009 the Bigfoot enthusiast made his MMA debut against 7-footer Hong Man Choi. It was one of the worst televised MMA fights in recent history. Choi would go on to put Canseco on the ground and unload his fists on him, where Canseco tapped out after a few seconds. The fight itself lasted barely more than a minute. The majority of the fight was just Canseco running around the ring, getting tagged by Choi, throwing a wild shot, repeat. It felt like the same thing Canseco pulled against Billy Football, except it was MMA, not boxing. After going back and rewatching his abysmal loss to Hang Man Choi, it makes me wonder how nobody thought he wouldn’t just do the same thing again. It was a weenie hut junior movie by a weenie hut general guy. It doesn’t matter what kind of combat sport it is. Canseco will find some way to tarnish it. That was the only MMA bout Canseco took part in, with record at a whopping 0-1.

Canseco has tried his luck in the boxing ring before his Rough N’ Rowdy debut. A few years after his MMA debut, Canseco was scheduled to box in a celebrity boxing promotion. Canseco tried out the old switcharoo, sending his twin brother Ozzie in his place. Unfortunately for Jose, his brother has no tattoos on his arm. Didn’t think about that one did ya Jose? And if he did think about that, it make it even funnier. I mean that’s a classic move, if you’re a good guy. But with his track record, it makes complete sense why he would do it. It wouldn’t be the first or last time Canseco would try to weasel out of an athletic endeavor. You can love him or hate him (most people hate him). but one thing is for sure. Jose Canseco has definitely had an unforgettable professional sports career.

Arguably the most famous play of Canseco’s legendary sports career
