Today In Sports History (February 16, 1972)

On this day in 1972, Wilt Chamberlain made NBA history by being the first player to reach the 30,000 points in his career. He was a Los Angeles Laker at the time. Despite Chamberlain’s record setting game, the Lakers went down to the Phoenix Suns 110-109. Wilt Chamberlain ended his career with 31,419 points. Currently, there are six players ahead of Chamberlain in all-time points scored. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is currently first all-time in points scored, but if any player has a realistic chance to pass him, it’s the King. LeBron James is in his 18th year, and he’s still in phenomenal shape and probably will be until he retires. If he’s lasted 18 years, who realistically thinks he couldn’t do three more? If he keeps up about the same production for the next few years (which he definitely can) then don’t be surprised if LeBron ends up passing Jabbar for fist all-time in points.
