On this day in 1962, Fireball Roberts won the 4th Daytona 500 in dominating fashion. Edward Glenn “Fireball” Edwards was an American stock car racer from Florida. In the 1962 Daytona 500, Roberts absolutely dominated the event, leading for 144 of the 200 total laps. Fireball Roberts was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. In 1958, Fireball showcased unparalleled dominance winning six out of the 10 races he competed in. Fireball Roberts was nominated to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2014.
