Congrats to Novak Djokovic on His 9th Aussie Open Title

Rafael “Rafa” Nadal (the second ranked Tennis player in the world) was 223-1 in his career in Grand Slam matches after grabbing the first two sets of the match. After his quarterfinal against Stefanos Tsitsipas, that would all change. For only the second time in his career, Nadal lost a Grand Slam match after winning the first two sets. Nadal is currently tied for the most Grand Slam wins with Roger Federer, at 20. After Nadal blew a 2-0 lead in the quarterfinals, Novak Djokovic’s path to his 9th Australian Open title seemed that much more imminent.

Novak Djokovic made history in more than a few ways after securing his championship victory. It was his 9th Australian Open title, the most all-time by any men’s singles competitor. Roger Federer is next up with six. Djokovic would win the match in straight sets (7-5, 6-5, 6-2) over the 4th ranked player in world Daniil Medvedev. The Serbian would also lay his claim for the record of most consecutive weeks at world No. 1. Roger Federer owned that record, with 310 straight weeks at the top. With his newest Aussie Open championship, Djokovic will be guaranteed to break that record. With his latest Gran Slam victory, Djokovic marked his 18th Grand Slam championship, only two behind all-time leaders Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer (20). After the match, Djokovic expressed his relief for being able to break Federer’s record, and claimed his focus will now be on trying to break the all-time Grand Slam record. His next attempt for #19 will be the Roland-Garros (French Open) in May.

That’s the most intimate kiss I’ve ever seen someone give a trophy
