Today In Sports History (February 21, 1948)

On this day in 1948, the National Association for Stock Car Racing (NASCAR) was officially incorporated. The main reason NASCAR is what it is today, is because of William “Bill” France Sr., a car mechanic from Washington D.C., who also owned his own auto-repair shop. France felt there needed to be a governing body to sanction and promote races. France gathered some of the higher up members of the racing community, and NASCAR was born. Today NASCAR has become a billion-dollar industry.
