Today In Sports History (February 22, 1980)

On this day in 1980, one of the greatest upsets in sports history occurred. Do you believe in miracles?

The 1980 Olympics were going on in Lake Placid, New York. It was the heavily favored Soviet Union against the lowly United States. The Soviet Union was the four-time defending gold medalist and they had won gold in five out of the previous six Winter Olympics. Nobody was giving America much of a chance against the Soviet Union going into the game, and probably for good reason. The Soviet Union was on an unprecedented run of dominance, and their squad was made up of seasoned professional players with years of international experience, where the United States were mainly comprised of amateur players. They were the youngest team in the tournament, and it was the youngest national team the U.S. history. They were led by coach Herb Brooks.

America would go on to beat the Soviet Union in an upset for the ages. Most still regard it as the greatest upset in Olympics history, and of the greatest upset in sports history. However, LeBron James and the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers might have something to say about that. The United States won the game 4-3, shocking the entire world. The U.S. would go on to play Finland in the gold medal game, where America came out on top, claiming their second gold medal in Olympic hockey. Many years after “The Miracle on Ice”, Disney turned the story into a feature-film called Miracle.
