Time Machine Tuesday: A Look Back at Germany’s 7-1 Thrashing Against Brazil at 2014 FIFA World Cup Semi-Finals

I almost don’t even want to remind Brazilian fans about this one. I’m sure the entire country of Brazil wants to forget about this one, and I don’t blame them. Brazil was not only the host country for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They were the favorites. Argentina and Germany were behind Brazil as the favorite. Brazil was trying to win a sixth World Cup, which would separate them even further from any other country in terms of World Cup wins. At this point in time, no European country had ever won a World Cup on North American or South American soil. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

I remember watching the match pretty clearly. I was at a friend’s house and we were all pretty excited for how good this match was about to be. Two of the biggest FIFA juggernauts going at it for a spot in the FIFA World Cup Final. Boy were we in for it.

Germany came in like a hurricane mixed with a tornado scoring in the first 10 minutes to take a 1-0 lead. What happened next would leave essentially everyone stunned. Germany scored an astounding four goals in six minutes, absolutely crushing Brazil’s hopeful spirits. Before we even knew it, Germany was up 5-0 only 30 minutes into the match. At halftime it was 5-0, and I remember being stunned. I did think Germany was going to win going into the match, but not like that (maybe 4-3 or 3-1). In 102 pervious World Cup matches, Brazil had never been down more than three goals at any point. And Germany was up 5-0 at the half!! They just kept piling on and on. In the second half, it wasn’t much better for Brazil. Germany scored two goals inside 10 minutes and took a 7-0 lead. It was insane, almost like a bad dream, a nightmare. It couldn’t be real. But it was. Brazil managed to finally score a goal in the 90th minute, to make it 7-1. A loss like that is bad enough, but I can’t imagine if it was a shutout too. That goal might have been virtually worthless, but it was to save the embarrassment of losing 7-0, which does mean something. For these smaller countries, the FIFA World Cup means much much more than it does for Americans that have the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series, Stanley Cup, etc. It also comes every four years, so there is a lot more hype and buildup to it. It was an absolutely suffocating time for the Brazilian fans. This is the country that has more World Cup wins than any other nation. Brazil was also on a run of 62 competitive home matches won. They are one of the most dominant nations in the history of the sport, a giant. But it would be Germany’s day. Germany would go on to beat Argentina in the World Cup Final by slim 1-0 margin thanks to a late substitution from Mario Götze. At least Brazil lost to the eventual champions. I know it’s not a plus, but it’s better than losing to the team that didn’t win it all.

Maybe Brazil can take revenge come the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

pretty much yeah
