If anyone is coming out saying the Lakers are screwed, and they have no chance this season because of the slump they’re currently in, then they probably also thought the Clippers were the best team in the NBA last season. The Lakers have dropped four straight, with two blowouts and two close games. Their three-point shooting has been abysmal lately. Over the last six games, the Lakers shot over 35% from beyond the arc only once, in a 112-104 routing over Minnesota. They are 1-5 in their last six, and the last time LA beat a team above .500 was on February 4th against the Denver Nuggets. But in all honesty, I wouldn’t be worried for the Lake Show just yet.
Historically, January has always been the worst month for LeBron James and LeBron-led teams. The Cavaliers had a slump almost every year LeBron took them to the Finals from 2015-2018. Ironically enough, they were almost all in January. After the All-Star Break was usually when his teams started clicking, and by the playoffs they were rolling. Given this extremely chaotic and unforeseen season we’re in, this could be LeBron’s January. Based on the express scheduling, this might as well be the month of January for the Lakers. Sure they’re 1-5 in their last six, but I won’t start to worry until they drop to 6th-8th in the western conference. They currently sit at third, and it’s an extremely close race. The second half of the NBA season will be a lot more chaotic for teams, and some will play 40 games in a 68 day span. Insane. Adam Silver really switched up on everyone.
The next two opponents LA has will be Portland and Golden State. That will round out the month of February for the defending champs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they went 1-1 in those two games. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if they lost them both, but I think they’ll manage to snag one. The month of March should be a little easier on LA as scheduling goes, so I think we can look for them to make a move during that stretch. But it’s way too early to write them off now, they’re the defending champions for a reason.
