Today In Sports History (February 25, 1964)

On this day in 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay dethroned Sonny Liston for the world heavyweight boxing championship, by means of a seventh round technical knockout. Liston was an 8-1 betting favorite going into the fight. but young Cassius Clay had other ideas. He claimed he would knockout the champ in the eighth round, but the eighth round would never happen. Liston was unable to answer the bell for the eighth round, giving young Cassius Clay his first world heavyweight boxing championship. Cassius Clay would later be known as Muhammad Ali, one of the most revered athletes in American history. Ali would go on to win and defend multiple title matches. He was also the first boxer to win the world heavyweight championship three times. He may be gone, but his legacy will go on forever. Rest in peace to the greatest.
