Today In Sports History (March 1, 1941)

On this day in 1941, Elmer Layden was named the first commissioner of the NFL. Arch Ward was offered the position, but he refused and suggested Elmer Layden for the job. Layden was a former Notre Dame star fullback, and one of the Four Horsemen. Layden resigned as Notre Dame’s head coach in order to accept the position in 1941. Elmer Layden was Commish for five years, and resigned on January 11, 1946. Bert Bell was elected to be the next commissioner after Layden resigned.

Roger Goodell is the current commissioner of the NFL.
