On this day in 1968, Joe Frazier improved his professional record to 20-0, defeating Buster Mathis for the vacant world heavyweight boxing championship by TKO in the 11th round. The championship was vacated by Muhammad Ali, and the fight took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. Buster Mathis and Joe Frazier fought once before, during the 1964 Olympic Trials, where Mathis would win by decision. It was the only loss during Frazier’s amateur career. However, Frazier would get the better of Mathis when the title was up for grabs at the Garden. Smokin Joe was certainly on fire that night.
