Well no. He can be the first Islam Makhachev though. He can’t be the next Khabib, because guys like Nurmagomedov aren’t just walking down the street, available for the plucking. They’re bred for this (usually in Russia). The fighters out of Russia tend to feel like meta-advanced super humans, whether it be real life or the movies. Maybe it’s because they wrestle bears as a kid (like Khabib Nurgmagemedov), or it’s because of the extremely tough elements they face in Russia. Whichever way you chop it up, their methods are no doubt successful. But make no mistake. Islam Makhachev is bred for it. The Russian Combat Sambo World Champion added another victory to his resume last night, submitting Drew Dober (23-10) in the third round with an arm triangle. Makhachev is currently 8-1 in his UFC career, and is on a seven fight win streak since his only UFC loss back in 2015 to Adriano Martins. Makhachev is not related to Nurmagomedov for anyone wandering so, but they are long-time friends and training partners. Khabib was in Makhachev’s corner last night during his victory over Dober. Some say Islam will be the heir to the lightweight division with the retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev is currently 19-1 (8-1 in the UFC) and a title shot might be on the horizon soon. The lightweight division is full of talent, and it’s gonna be exiting to see how everything unfolds with guys like Dutin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje and newly acquired Michael Chandler. Adding Makhachev into the title picture does add more variables and questions, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all sets up. Hey what if Khabib decides to fight again? So many things could happen.
Congrats on Islam Makhachev for improving to 19-1 on his career. He was in control for much of the fight, and his submission skills were too much for Drew Dober. Credit to Dober, but the night belonged to Makhachev. I just hope his name comes up for a title fight soon. Better be careful, or Makhachev will Maulachev you.
And he’s gonna Maulachev everyone until he gets that belt. Believe that.
