Today In Sports History (March 8, 1936)

On this day in 1936, the first stock race took place in Daytona Bech, Florida. This race was one of the building blocks that helped form the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) as we know it today. Originally, the race was scheduled for 250 miles, but it was stopped after 241 miles due to the high tide covering up too much of the beach. Milt Marion, of St. Albans, New York, ended up victorious, claiming first place and $1,700. In today’s time, that’s around $30,000. Not a bad payday for a day on the beach.

Daytona is now home to the Daytona 500, ever heard of it? It’s only the crème de la crème of American racing.

Imagine thinking you would get a nice tan at the beach then BOOM you get run over by a billion cars and now you’re dead.
