Today In Sports History (March 13, 1960)

On this day in 1960, the White Sox unveiled new uniforms with players’ names above their number. It was the first time a professional North American sports team showcased a player’s name on their jersey. White Sox owner, Bill Veeck realized there was marketing potential with the rise of televised baseball games, and took a chance. A few years later, nicknames were introduced instead of a player’s last name. Now essentially every sports league has a player’s name on it.

Because having names on jerseys has become so commonplace, it typically feels weird to see a sports jersey without a name on it nowadays.
