Today In Sports History (March 14, 1978)

On this day in 1978, the NFL permanently added the 7th and final official, the side judge. The side judge is located behind the defensive secondary, and is responsible for decisions down the field. They also served as an umpire to field goals or extra points. Currently, there are still seven officials during an NFL game.

Some other football leagues have altered the amount of officials used during a football game.
