Today In Sports History (March 16, 1876)

On this day in 1876, the first ever female boxing match took place in the United States. Nelly Saunders went up against Rose Harland at Hills Theater in New York City, NY. They supposedly fought over a silver butter dish. It’s weird when you think about it, because this was probably the only time in history where someone got silver for winning instead of gold. It must’ve been a really nice butter dish.
