On this day in 1971, the Harlem Globetrotters were defeated 100-99 by the New Jersey Reds in Martin, Tennessee. The loss marked the end of a 2,495 game win-streak for the Globetrotters. The game went to overtime where the Globetrotters found themselves down by 12 with only 2 minutes left to play. The Washington Generals played under several different identities from 1971-1972. The other team identities the Generals played under were the Boston Shamrocks, Baltimore Rockets and the Atlantic City Seagulls. Generals founder Louis “Red” Klotz described the reaction of the crowd members as if they had just murdered Santa Clause.
