Brian Flores Filed a Lawsuit Against the NFL

Just when life as a Miami Dolphins fan reached a new low, we find out about this little gem. Brian Flores was personally my favorite coach that Miami has had during my lifetime. The guy had by far the largest cojones of any NFL coach. He turned the Dolphins around immediately. Yeah there were a few big games he didn’t get that would’ve been helped their playoff aspirations, but don’t let that dictate his entire tenure with them. Apparently there was an incident where Flores blew up at Tua Tagovailoa during halftime of a bad loss to the Titans back in week 17; a game that effectively ended Miami’s playoff hopes. Miami’s owner Stephen Ross seems to have taken the side of Tagovailoa, as he fired Flores after the season ended. That may not have been the case. Potentially he saw an opportunity to take action against Flores and this was the scapegoat reason he needed.

Upon Flores’ departure, other information has come to light amidst the lawsuit Flores filed against the NFL. Miami Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross, allegedly offered Coach Flores $100,000 for every game he lost earlier in the season, in order to gain a higher draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft this spring. While tanking is not seen as cheating, this just feels wrong. It’s different if you’re already a very bad team and you aren’t going to be winning much to begin with. But Miami ended up going 9-8 this season after a 1-7 start. If they had their act together in the first half of the season, Miami could’ve easily ended up in a very different situation right now. For all we know, they could still be playing their season. Probably not, but hey look at Cincinnati and what they’ve done this postseason. The Dolphins just missed out on the playoffs for the second year in a row, but they had real chances of making it both times. They were competitive. As a fan of the organization, that’s nice to see. There’s nothing worse than knowing that a team is more than capable of success, and not seeing the results because of self-inflicted or stupid mistakes. Now imagine that team being capable and there’s a coach that really wants to win. But the owner of said team is actively trying to lose games in order for draft picks. And then when the coach who keeps trying to win doesn’t lose like the owner wants, he gets fired. Oh and don’t forget he’s the best coach that organization has had in a over a decade.

It’s so frustrating as a fan, because you always hear the old adage, “the NFL is a business at the end of the day,” but I’m sick of it. Sure it’s a business, but why is it a profitable business? THE FANS. As an NFL owner, I get the franchise does need to make money in order to continue. That also means the front office should do things to stay in the good graces of the fans of the organization. Ya know the fans that fill the stadium, buy the merchandise and pay for the cushy lives of the higher-up team executives. Yet here comes this bozo offering Flores $100,000 for every game he loses; because he wants better picks. If you as a team owner are looking for more profit, go own something different. It’s a sports league people. And the fans of said leagues want their teams to win. Not for the organization to keep screwing up draft picks year after year, get mad when bad picks don’t turn out and then tank for more bad draft picks. It’s a vicious cycle of stupidity and ego. It’s almost like half the NFL owners shouldn’t actually be owners at all.

The real crime is that Flores is out a job and people like Stephen Ross and Chris Grier still have influence and control over football related situations. Brian Flores should have been hired instantly after getting released from Miami. He’s a stellar coach, and he wants to win. Truthfully, he never should’ve been let go, but there’s nothing that can be done about that now. I’m all for Flores taking action against the league. The guy got treated so unjustly, and he shouldn’t stand for any of it.

In all seriousness though, Stephen Ross is now Public Enemy No. 1. The fact that he would even consider paying Flores to tank when they had a playoff team is ridiculous. That guy does not need to be in control of anything in this world that affects other people, especially a professional football team.
