I mean yeah. I did say the logical choice would be a 2nd round submission by Makhachev, but he decided to just maul Bobby Green instead, respectively. His presence on the ground is just so smothering, it’s insane. As soon as he got the takedown, it felt like a matter of time. But let’s be honest, Islam could’ve gone for a choke if he wanted to. I think he wanted to prove he doesn’t need to go for the submission. Maybe it’s because earlier in the week Green said that Makhachev’s submission finishes were boring, and that was his way of proving a point. Maybe not. My opinion means nothing.
But I have been saying since he submitted Drew Dober back at UFC 259, Makhachev needs to be in the title picture, and now he’s about to bang down the door for it. He has to face the winner of Oliveira-Gaethje for the title next. And he’s probably gonna win that too. He’s on a 10 fight win-streak and for good reason. He’s mauled about everyone he’s faced, and tonight was no different. Big respect to Bobby Green tonight. Hey, he lost a fight he wasn’t supposed to win on super short notice. The cojones on that guy are huge, and this won’t stop his career in the slightest.
Can’t forget about Beneil though. I know he hates that he got injured, because this was gonna be a huge fight for the Lightweight division with big implications. Maybe that can be the first defense Islam has? Hope his recovery goes well, so we can get to see that matchup.
Islam is a monster. Second straight first-round finish and his 4th KO/TKO win of his career (second in the UFC). You could say early stoppage but that would not have changed the outcome of things. Makhachev maulacheved King Green tonight. He needs that title shot next. I just don’t think he’ll fancy the idea of parting with it after he inevitably gets it.
