On this day in 2012, Lionel Messi won his 4th Ballon d’Or (Golden Ball) award for a record 4th consecutive year. He has won 8 throughout his professional career, which is also a record. He is also the current Ballon d’Or recipient, as he won in 2023 after helping finally achieve a World Cup victory for his home nation Argentina. Messi is the only player to win the Ballon d’Or while playing for three different teams, as well as the only player to win while playing outside of Europe. Many regard Messi as the greatest player to ever kick a ball and rightfully so. Currently Lionel Messi is a member of the Inter Miami CF.
