Today In Sports History (January 10, 1985)

On this day in 1985, Lenny Wilkens becomes first to coach in the NBA to win 1,000 games. The Seattle SuperSonics defeat the Golden State Warriors, 89-86, giving Wilkens his milestone achievement. Wilkens was an NBA player himself, getting drafted by the St. Louis Hawks in 1960. He went on to play for the Seattle SuperSonics, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trailblazers. During his time with Seattle, Wilkens was a player-coach as well as his lone season in Portland. He retired from playing basketball in 1975, but would continue to cement his legacy as a coach in the league. He led the SuperSonics to their only championship in 1979 over the Washington Bullets.
