On this day in 1955, the University of San Francisco men’s college basketball team won its first of back-to-back national titles. The Dons beat La Salle University 77-63 to capture the NCAA title, with Bill Russell claiming the Most Outstanding Player award. He averaged 23.6 points per game during the 1955 tournament. Russell went on to lead the University of San Francisco to another national title the next year before turning pro and joining the NBA. Bill Russell went on to be drafted by the Boston Celtics, where he won 11 NBA titles during a 13 year career – a record still unbroken to this day. Bill Russell was 88 when he passed away on July 31, 2022. His legacy has had incredible lasting impact on the game of basketball as a whole.
