Today In Sports History (March 28, 1891)

On this day in 1891, the world’s first weightlifting championship was held in London, England. The competition took 7 men from 6 countries, where local Brit Edward Lawrence Levy was awarded with the world championship. As well as England, the other competitors were from Brussels, Hamburg, Vienna, Italy, and Berlin. Two months before this, Levy had also won the first-ever British Amateur Weightlifting Championship. Levy set multiple world records in the process. At the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, Levy served as a member of the International Weightlifting Jury.
