On this day in 1963, the running of the 117th Grand National steeplechase took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England. Ayala was the winning horse, with 19-year-old Pat Buckley as the jockey. Ayala won over Carrickbeg by a slim margin of 3/4 of a length. Ayala was sitting a 66/1 longshot coming into the race and shocked the likes of many with their performance.
