On this day in 1996, the Vancouver Grizzlies ended their NBA single-season record 23-game losing streak over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Blue Edwards hit a 16-foot game-winner to give the Grizzlies their first win in 23 games, beating the Timberwolves 105-103. They hadn’t won a game since Valentine’s Day. During that time, they set the NBA single-season losing streak and were dangerously close to setting the all-time NBA losing streak previously owned by the Cleveland Cavaliers over a span of two seasons from 1981-1983. Crazily enough, the Grizzlies had already had a previous losing streak earlier that season of 19 games. It was the first year for the new expansion Vancouver team, and the first time Canada had an NBA team since the 1940s. The Toronto Raptors were also apart of that expansion. The Vancouver Grizzlies ended the season 15-67 with the lowest win total in the league. To make matters worse, they were not ineligible to get the overall draft pick in the upcoming draft because they were an expansion team. The Grizzlies stayed in Vancouver until 2001, when they moved to Memphis, where the team currently resides.
The 2023-2024 Detroit Pistons hold the current record for most consecutive losses at 28. They finished the season 14-68. The 1947-48 Steam Rollers currently have the lowest win total from a single-season at 6-42. But the 2011-12 (NBA Lockout Year) Charlotte Bobcats team has the lowest single-season win percentage at 7-59 (.106). Sadly the Bobcats started the year with a victory.
