Today In Sports History (April 4, 1988)

On this day in 1988, Eddie “The Thrill” Hill became the first driver in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to cover the quarter mile in under 5 seconds; 4.990 to be exact during his second pass at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. He clocked in at 288.55 MPH during his historic run. Twenty years earlier in New Mexico, Hill set the record for first driver to break the 200 MPH barrier in a gas-powered car. He is also the only man to win a world drag-racing title on both land and water, and is one of the forefathers in the history of automobile racing.
