On this day in 2007, the 36th annual Fiesta Bowl took place in Glendale, Arizona. The Fiesta Bowl is a college football bowl game, and in 2007 was apart of the 2006-07 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) of the 2006 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The two teams facing off were the No. 10 ranked Oklahoma Sooners versus the No. 8 ranked Boise State Broncos. The 2007 Fiesta Bowl is widely regarded as the greatest game of football ever played.

The Oklahoma Sooners were a known football powerhouse, and they were pitted up against an underdog, relatively unknown program in Boise State. Despite this, Boise State came out firing, taking a 28-10 lead midway through the third quarter. Oklahoma would then go on to score 25 unanswered points, taking a 35-28 with just over a minute left to play. It was also Oklahoma’s first lead of the game. Boise State would go on to score a touchdown on 4th & 18 from the 50-yard line to force overtime in extremely dramatic fashion. During overtime, Boise State would go on to shock the world, electing to go for the two-point conversion to win the game, rather than trying to send the game into a second overtime. It was a risky decision for first-year head coach Chris Petersen that turned out to work marvelously in his favor, securing the OT win over Oklahoma in an instant classic. This win would go on to cement Boise State’s status as an unlikely powerhouse in college football during the entirety of Chris Petersen’s time with the team.

13 years later, this game is still revered as one of if not the greatest football game ever played.

But don’t just take my word for it. You can watch the entirety of the game below:
