Today In Sports History (January 2, 1832)

On this day in 1832, the first curling club in America was founded. The Orchard Lake Curling Club was established in 1832, outside of Detroit and was the first club of its kind. While it was the first club devoted to curling in the US, the oldest continuously operating curling club in America is the Milwaukee, Wisconsin club which was founded in 1845. Looking back through history, there are depictions of what could be described as curling from the 16th century, however Scotland is credited with developing the modern game of curling we know today. By the mid-17th century, curling was considered with golf and archery as another recreational pastime of Scotland. While the oldest curling club in the US was founded in 1832, the oldest documentation of curling in North America is the Montreal Curling Club founded in 1807.
