On this day in 1924, the first Winter Olympic Games began in the French Alps of Chamonix. The first Winter Olympian to receive a gold medal was American Charles Jewtraw, who won first in the 500 meter speed skating event. He was the lone American to win a gold medal at those Olympic Games. 16 different nations were represented in the first Winter Olympics, with Germany being banned due to ya know, Nazis. Instead, they hosted their own Deutsche Kampfspiel, or German Combat Games. Norway ended up with the most athletes winning gold, silver or bronze medals with 17 in total. They led all nations in Olympic medals that year as well. There were 16 total events across 6 different sports. By no surprise, Canada absolutely dominated ice hockey, not allowing a single goal to be scored against them until their third match. Big shocker there, eh.
