No surprises here, as the Danish Delight takes over in the championship match. Kunlavut Vitidsarn was off to a great start against Axelsen, and it was back-and-forth early on. Vitidsarn was even winning 11-10 at the mid-game interval in the first game. But the Danish Delight does what he does best, and turned up the heat. After tying it up at 12-12, the Danish Delight wouldn’t trail for the rest of the championship match. Are you not entertained?
In the second game, the Danish Delight jumped out to a piercingly quick lead, and the championship was in his sights. In the first game, Axelsen was trailing going into the mid-game interval, whereas in the second game he had a commanding 11-2 lead.
Viktor Axelsen wouldn’t stop there, and he just kept his foot on the gas pedal. The Danish Delight did have a pretty cool play just after the mid-game interval. It was a point for Vitidsarn, but it was the best point Axelsen didn’t score. It set up a nice smash my Vitidsarn.
Overall, Kunlavut Vitidsarn gave it a valiant effort. Nobody had stolen a game from Axelsen all tournament, and he was rolling. Vitidsarn came out firing early, but he might’ve spent his powder on the first half of the first game. In the end, the Dane would not be denied of a championship, capturing the first win of the 2021 BWF season.
Remember after the first round when Axelsen said in his post-match interview that his focus was on the YONEX All-England? If not you can find it here. Insane. The guy plowed through everyone and his focus was on the next event, and not the tournament he was currently playing in. With Kento Momota coming back at the All-England Open, it should make for a great time all around. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying Axelsen’s greatness today.
